Coast Funds launched Talking Stick in 2011 as a four-page newsletter to “keep [Nations] informed about the wide range of projects that communities are working on,” said Cindy Boyko, former Chair of Coast Funds’ Communications Committee. Fast-forward 15 years and the legacy of Talking Stick continues to this day.

Over time, Talking Stick has evolved from newsletter to magazine. In the past, the newsletter shared stories of launching eco-cultural tours in Haíɫzaqv Heiltsuk territory, to Gwa’sala-Nakwaxda’xw starting its Guardian Watchman program, to exploring the logistics of Conservancy Management Planning, and introducing new team members within Coast Funds’ staff and board.

This first annual edition takes time to learn from the people of the Great Bear Coast who are driving progress and prosperity in their communities. In this edition, we dive into one-on-one interviews with:

  • Elder Sim’oogit Baxk’ap Chief Jacob Nyce,
  • Regenerative ocean farm technician Andrew Llewellyn, and
  • Mural artist Khasalus Kolten Grant.

Every year, we celebrate and share First Nations’ stories and ideas from the Great Bear Rainforest, Haida Gwaii, and surrounding seas. With Coast Funds’ 20th anniversary approaching (2027), we look forward to reflecting on some of the milestone moments throughout Coast Funds’ history.
